The Republic of Cyprus is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean. It has been located at the third popular island in the Mediterranean. The beauty of this piece of heaven has one of the warmest climates in the area. This is the reason why Cyprus is such a searched destination for vacations and business trips.

Traditional costumes

The community gets used to create huge weddings they are similar to the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. It is common that at such gathering to be over 1000 guests and this could be considered as a small wedding. There are lots of traditional and custom acts before the actual marriage. The wedding season is the summer and this special day often starts in the morning and the marriage vow could be said in the late afternoon – 4pm or even later.

Our wedding

The bride and the groom are preparing themselves separately and every family member is involved in this feast. The Best Man and the Maid of Honor help them to get ready. The Best Man has to shave the groom and dress him in his shirt. Otherwise, the Maid of Honor helps the bride with the jewelry and shoes. There is a group of musicians who play traditional songs. The tradition says that a red piece of red cloth has to be tied and untied around the waist of the newlyweds for fertility.

Now they are ready. the nex step is in the church. The groom waits outside with the bride’s bouquet. The couple walks down together in the church and the ceremony starts. They are going to wear headbands called Stefana. The priest leads them to a table where are placed the Gospel and the Cross. The newlyweds are going to be followed by the Best Man and the Maid of Honor and hold the Stefana. The wedding rings must be exchanged 3 times and at the end when the couple leaves the church confetti and rice have been thrown.

After the wedding ceremony, there is a cocktail where all the guests line up to come to give wishes and money. This is a little start for the new family after that there is a dinner and evening celebrations for a smaller number of guests.
